My parent's birthdays fall on the same week every summer (my Mom is a cougar by five days haha), and every year my sisters and I struggle with what to get them. There's only so many candles, kitchen gadgets, and man cave signs we can buy until they're sick of all the crap we keep tossing at them.
It was my sister Grace who had the bright idea to get our family photos re-done and framed for the new cottage that my parents recently completed. The last time we had professional family pictures taken was when we still had braces, so needless to stay, it was time for an update to go along with the new digs.
We discovered that one of our childhood swimming instructors was now married to an amazing wedding photographer, Jessica Imrie, and that she had actually taken some beautiful family portraits at Norway Bay when she was visiting with her family on long weekends. Luckily she was available over August long weekend and willing to shoot our wacky family!
Jess was amazing and made the whole experience really comfortable for us. Usually it's hard to "act natural" when there's a giant lens in front of you (and we are NOT naturals in front of a camera at all), but she made us feel relaxed immediately. Jess arrived in time for golden hour (she's a lighting whiz), and we were so happy with how the shots turned out. Without booking a photography session, there is no way we would have ever taken the time to put our wine glasses down, colour-coordinate, and get some quality family photos -- which is probably why our last ones are from the "awkward phases" years ago.
It was the perfect gift for our parents and now we have some updated shots for our new cottage. Jess is Ontario-based but available for travel if you happen to be getting married or looking for a family photographer (and nope not #sponsored lol, she's just worthy of the cred) Either way you can't really go wrong with a present like this for mom and pop! :)
Below are a few sample shots from our session:
