Svea Swim, a new Canadian swimwear line, launched their website on Wednesday and I am so so so excited!!!
With swimsuit season upon us (June 21 is the first day of summer this year!) I've been having a hard time finding a simple suit in a cute colour, that is comfortable, and provides a little bit of support/coverage. While the swim market is seemingly saturated, most are pretty cookie cutter. I've made the mistake of ordering suits online or that I saw on Instagram and they never fit properly. They also look lumpy and frumpy (lol) in comparison to the perfect Insta models sporting them.
The bikini bodies we see on our screens are 0.01% of the population so it's challenging to find suits that are, well, suitable for the rest of us. Even in store, I find that many of the cuts and fabrics don't fit real women's bodies. Bathing suit shopping, in general, is usually fraught with frustration.
Julia was getting so many requests from friends to make custom bathing suits that she decided to start her own business. If so many of her own friends weren't finding what they were looking for then she figured a lot of other women must be on the hunt for comfy, custom cuts too. She saw the gap and with the launch of Svea Swim, she's filling it. HUZZAH!
I recently sat down with Julia and got the chance to interview her for a brand new podcast episode (launch details to be revealed shortly) - so I'll be able to share that chat with her next Wednesday!
In the meantime, I wanted to talk more about Svea Swim and why it stands out amongst the crowd of itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikinis.
Body Positivity & Inclusivity
The most notable is that the brand represents everybody and every body. Take a scroll through the Instagram feed and you'll see REAL women of all shapes and sizes.
Julia wanted her bathers to make women feel confident and empowered in their own skin so she created HER OWN SIZES (!!!) She doesn't believe in differentiating standard industry vs. plus size. We are all varying degrees of the same spectrum.
To accomplish this, Julia made a specialized FIT GUIDE which uses your exact bust, underbust, waist, and hip measurements for a customized fit. Svea sizes range from 1 to 5 and all tops and bottoms can be mixed and matched.
Svea Swim is designed in Toronto and manufactured in Montreal. 100% Canadian-made. It's so important to support local businesses and designers crafting quality, ethically-sourced products. Julia is cognizant of the amount of waste produced by the fashion industry and is dedicated to finding ways to utilize recycled fabrics and scrap materials to further support local and environmental practices.
Colour & Comfort
GUYS, these suits are IMPOSSIBLY SOFT and fit like a glove (they're a blend of 80% nylon and 20% spandex). The fabric is sourced locally and the tops and bottoms come in black, a turquoisey-teal-crimson blue, a cherry red, and a pinkish lilac. It is so hard to find solid hues and simple silhouettes. Busy patterns are fun but I think clean, uncomplicated designs always look and feel the best.
I bought The Nora bottoms and The Rosa top in the lilac colour (for starters!) which I can't wait to strut on the beach soon !!
Women Supporting Women
A subtle detail that I discovered (and love) about the brand is that the suits are all named after powerful women in history. Anything that weaves women empowerment into their brand story is alright by me!
- Tops: The Frida, The Amelia, The Rosa
- Bottoms: The Nora, The Marie
- One-Piece: The Michelle
Streamlined & Simple to Shop
I find the website and custom fit guide so user-friendly that it's an added benefit to me as a consumer. If something is confusing or has too many options, I get overwhelmed and just click off, so I love that the suits are easy to shop. Plus, being able to mix and match the tops and bottoms is amazing.
